Just wondering if OSX x86 is supported natively.

We are officially supporting MacOS on Intel Macs.

I have a feeling the current binary I am running is being emulated (don't know much about OSX - just started out tonight) because a long wu takes about 23 hrs in windows, and 30+ hrs in OSX.

Which App are you currently running (look into the "Tasks" tab of the BOINC Manager)? If it's 4.26, you are running a PPC App where emulation is involved. If you are running 4.28, you are running a native x86 App.

This is on a Dell Inspiron 1100.

I honestly have no idea of the behavior of the BOINC Client on Darwin on non-Apple hardware.

Should I use the G5 "Power User" app?

Definitely not. You should run the 4.28 App, either downloaded automatically by the client or manually installed (see previous link from Matt).

The BOINC client is also important. The official platform name it should report is "i686-apple-darwin". If it's reporting any other Darwin platform, it will proabably identify as PPC and get the PPC App that requires emulation.
