Email verification problem??

Topic 12373

The email address in your account data looks quite odd to me, containing two "@" (one right at the beginning) and a lot of chracters ("_....") following after the top level domain. Maybe there was something more in the clipboard when you pasted it than you intended, or whatver - the one currently in the database is definetly invalid.

And by the way: "Needless to say" - yes. Absolutely needless. We're doing what we can, and this is still test phase.

Email verification problem??

I just sent a note to our database guys, they'll have a look (but maybe not at the weekend).

BTW: We are manually and gradually increasing the number of (test-) users as we are changing hardware and software to be able to handle more and more of them. Far more people than we expected and could handle signed up to show their interest in participating and we had (and still have) to hold them back to not break the project. So "waiting" for an account for weeks is not unusual in this phase. Once the door is open for the public, automatic account creation should work within minutes.

I'm still seeing the old invalid address in the database, maybe it's not accepting any change to that odd thing. I'll let the PHP/DB guys sort this out, there's alway one more bug left....

Thank you for reporting this

Thank you for reporting this problem. I suspect that there is a problem with some php code somewhere and I will look into it now.

I will let you know when the problem is fixed.

I think the problem is that the email is not making it to your account for some reason (maybe spam filtering or something). I would suggest the you change your email back to the original or some other account and if you receive the email then every thing is working fine on our end.

I looked at the relevant code and tested my own account and every thing worked for me.

Bernd commented that your email address looked incorrect in the database but actually the email address is intentionally "munged" until the user varieties that the email account actually belongs to them.

The email system for E@H is not actually slow I think there is just a misunderstanding of how accounts get created. When you sign up on the APS website
http://www.physics2005.org/events/einsteinathome/index.html
you get put on a waiting list for an account. As soon as Bruce feels that our system is ready to handle more users (and computers) we add the next 2000 or so users on the waiting list. We are continuously working to improve our systems and eventually we expect that everyone who wants to contribute to E@H will be able to.

Thank you,

No that is your cross project ID. If you go to

http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/home.php

log out and go back to

http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/home.php

you can click that you do not know your account key and it will be emailed to you.

That is perfectly OK -- thanks for asking. If you signed up on the APS mailing list with several different email addresses and so you get several account keys, please give away the extra ones to whomever you like.

As soon as we finish investigating one last potential bug out of our application code (:-) and the 4.19 client has proven to be stable, I'll send out account keys to the remaining people on the APS sign up list.

Cheers,
Bruce
