The Boinc Logo is normally

The Boinc Logo is normally hidden by the screensaver graphics, so if you see it, it means that for some reason the graphics couln't be opened. So it seems on your machine the graphics can only be opened once until the App is restarted (for the next Result). This might well be related to a bug Walt Gribben found lately in the BOINC library. It will take some time to get it fixed and have a new App ready, though. Sorry.

In addition to the version numbers, it would be nice if the "test version" page, http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/app_test.php, also showed the version date.

I believe there has only been the one release.

Future enhancement then? :-)

Some. We are currently awaiting another fix in the BOINC lib before we build and publish a new App.

I just posted a new Window App (0.18) for beta testing. It involves quite some fixes to the BOINC library, including the previous ATI graphics driver fix and a fix to some other problems (mainly general access violations) in conjunction with the graphics.

Please test and report!

But I the version you posted includes a bad app_info.xml:

What's wrong with it? I allows to smoothly migrate from the 0.03 to 0.18 App if you leave the einstein_0.03_... files in place as long as there are Results assigned to it.

Sorry - that information was included in the instructions for the Mac Beta test, but I forgot to take it over to the Windows one. My fault.

Should the .18 beta installation give a seamless transition from 4.79?

No, it won't. You are actually changing the platform, not only the App version.

1. The science code and

1. The science code and compilation flags of 0.03 and 0.18 are the same, so there should be no noticable difference in calculation times. If there is a difference at all, this should be in the range below about 3%, which is a normal variation between the workunits anyway. The App code differs only in the version of the BOINC library.

2. It's true that the current compilation flags favour the P4 a bit, as it seems to be the CPU most commonly used in this project.

3. Between the BOINC code the 4.79 App was build from and the one used in 0.03 and 0.18 one major change was the thread priority setting of the "worker" thread, which is even lower in the new code. Depending on what else is running on the machine (services, programs, even the BOINC Manager in certain versions) this influences the cruching time, and thus might be responsible for about 10% decrease. I have no other explanation for that, as the code didn't change (much), and the compiler and optimization flags used didn't change either. As there have been problems reported with the old priority setting (unresponsive computers, non-terminating screensavers) I would rather leave that as it is now.

I was just now rereading the Einstein@Home Beta Testing page and I noticed that, although there are good instructions for installing the Beta application, there aren't any instructions for uninstalling it. And, somehow, I doubt that reading the install instructions backwards will work very well.

Please delete app_info.xml or rename it, for example to app_info_saved.xml .

Just an update -- for the

Just an update -- for the past couple of months we have been preparing a new and better (more sensitive -- can see farther) search code. This incorporates all the good changes from the Windows Beta test app. Currently we have not yet started distributing this new search code and newly prepared S4 data because we are having trouble getting the new validator to work correctly. But hopefullly this will be fixed soon and then E@H users will be getting a new app with all the fixes, plus more data and a more sensitive search.

Thanks for your patience. It's hard work to get all the BOINC bits to work properly together.

Cheers,
Bruce

Quick question - will the more sensitive code be only used on new S4 data, or can it be used to recheck older data too?

New S4 data only.

Data is somewhat like a car. When you have an old clunky one, and a new shiny one, you tend to lose interest in the old clunker. In this case, S4 data is more sensitive than S1-S3, so we are our interest in S3 is fading. Not to say that we wouldn't ever go back to it, but this would be mostly for pedagogic purposes and not for discovery.
