From the 4.25 App Thread:

I'll try to build an App with the old Visual Studio of 2003 (instead of VS2005). At least the /G7 optimization should work there. Let's see if it helps...

It can be found on the Power User's Apps page. This is definitely not a release candidate, just something to see in which direction to proceed.

Windows S5R3 "power users" App 4.26 available

EDIT: From what I read here, it seems that the poor performance of the VS 2005 compiler compared to VS 2003 in this particular case (generating code full of store-forwarding-stalls) might be related to a bug acknowledged by Microsoft and fixed only in Visual Studio 2008.

Thanks!

I'm still waiting for my copy of VS2008 to arrive...

Is this something that could be build using the express (free to download) edition of VC08? It's cut down from the standard/pro/etc editions to be more suited for the casual user, so it might not have everything you need, but if you have the time there's no harm in trying.

Thanks! No, it diddn't work for VS2003, so I don't think it will work with 2008. There are libraries and tools missing.

With all of the problems you're encountering with the Microsoft compilers, would it be possible to try some other compiler, like for example, Borland or OpenWatcom? I'd be curious as to whether something else might produce more bug-free code.

Actually I only have seen one thing that I'd consider a serious bug. Difference in performance of the produced binaries between versions of compilers are common, I know quite some cases for gcc, too.

BOINC is currently bound to the M$ compiler, and mixed linking is painful and the results still have their drawbacks. I'd really like to use the Intel compiler for all x86-based platforms, but so far I could get neither BOINC nor our code compiled with these.

It seems that all

It seems that all speed-freaks are now running this 4.26 App, and almost nobody pays attention to 4.25 anymore. Actually I'd like to have an App that I could make "official default" at some point, and that should run reliable under Vista, too.

Could people try to get this App running on Vista as much as possible? I'm a bit afraid that it won't work because of the old compiler and libraries I used...

Originally not planned for a release I now published the 4.26 as first "official" "separate graphics" App. I hope that we'll see the benefits of this approach in this App soon, i.e. graphics on Vista working and a decrease of computation errors as graphics problems shouldn't affect the computation any more.

BM

PS: BOINC currently doesn't compile with VS2008, I'm afraid we'll have to stick to VS2003 for a while.

As an example of "graphics problems shouldn't affect the computation any more", I would guess the following that happened to me while I was sleeping would be an example:

2/5/2008 2:45:13 AM|Einstein@Home|[error] einstein_S5R3 not responding to screensaver, requesting exit
2/5/2008 2:45:14 AM|Einstein@Home|Task h1_0779.45_S5R2__77_S5R3a_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
2/5/2008 2:45:14 AM|Einstein@Home|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.
2/5/2008 2:45:14 AM|Einstein@Home|Restarting task h1_0779.45_S5R2__77_S5R3a_0 using einstein_S5R3 version 426
2/5/2008 4:49:06 AM|Einstein@Home|Computation for task h1_0779.45_S5R2__77_S5R3a_0 finished

This error is new to me. What the OS, Client version and installation type is this?

It's bad that in this case the Client terminates the App, but it does this gently and should simply restart it, instead of the graphics crashing the whole task.

Since this is now the main App, should this be removed from sticky?

My idea was to leve this thread at top for a few more days for the people that got the 4.26 new now and want to comment on it.

However I'm not sure that in this case they'll find the thread at all. Any better ideas for where to announce and discuss new Apps, especially "public" ones?

Oh that page...

This is automatically generated from the DB, and regarding the DB it's so difficult to get certain things in that no one even dares to think about how to get things out once they're obsolete.

But a reversal of the display order sounds like a good idea and should easily be possible.

So, I should remove the app_info.xml file?

You could, but you don't need to. At least one more "power app" is in the pipeline and will hopefully come out next week.

You can remove applications from the ops pages, unless you're running old server code.

Indeed that feature was new to me. Thank you very much for pointing me to it!
