A new Windows App is available from our Beta Test Page.

In addition to the fixes included in 6.09 this App also uses a newer version of the BOINC API code which should fix the problem of communicating with the graphics process on Win98/ME. It might well be that some other behavior changed, too, so please test this App also if you are running a recent version of Windows.

Switching from previous Apps 6.04 - 6.09 should be painless with the included app_info.xml.

Please test and report.

Windows S5R4 App 6.10 available for Beta Test

Does this app_info allow for the PALFA work?

Good point.

No, it doesn't. But I doubt that we will issue more ABP1 work before scientists and technicians are back from holidays (Jan 5 2009).

Is there a way for us that is using app_info to run beta 6.10 for win to get the files to run both. I´m wondering because I saw the files listed in current version section (3.02 for win).

You could manually download the einsteinbinary_ABP1_3.02* files from http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/download/ and add a section for app einsteinbinary_ABP1 to the app_info.xml. However I doubt that this would make much sense right now as we are not issuing any ABP1 work in the next weeks and furthermore you'd miss updates to the einsteinbinary application.

Better help us test the 6.10 Windows Beta App so we can make it official and then switch back to the "official" path.

Sorry I found a flaw in the

Sorry I found a flaw in the SSE2 part of the App (only) that leads to occasional invalid results (thanks again, Bikeman).

I updated the App package, new md5sum is 93dc3c4f4980e441fe82b0acaee46b1e. Please update your einstein_S5R4_6.10..._2.exe file from the new package if your CPU uses SSE2.

RE: After this new SSE2

After this new SSE2 executable is tested some, what are the prospects for making it the stock application for Windows? Also, what's going on with S5R5?

S5R5 is still somewhat delayed until staff an scientists are back from holidays around Jan 5.

Note that testing the 6.10 S5R4 App is actually testing the code we will use for S5R5 (in fact the "flaw" I found in the SSE2 App was that it was built as an S5R5 one, i.e. it contained the leap seconds fix that we need to switch off for compatibility to existing S5R4 Apps).

My goal is to make this S5R4 App "official" before we issue more ABP1 (PALFA) work, which is bound to similar constraints as S5R5.

I just made this App

I just made this App "official". This gives you the opportunity now to switch back to the "official" path (you should empty your work cache before removing the app_info.xml), which I would recommend. This will allow you to get ABP1 and S5R5 work right away when we issue it.

However, I think your theory is a plausible one: and if I remember rightly, Einstein graphics can be disabled by placing a dummy null file with an appropriate name in the BOINC directory. I'll go and search for the reference: maybe useful for someone to test with.

Edit - that name was EAH_NO_GRAPHICS: description of usage here

Yeah, I had forgotten about that flag file. I don't mind the star sphere, so I just let it run... Of course my Intel P4 system is a service install, so no graphics on that anyway. I hope Sabroe gives it a shot to see if that helps...

This file has no effect since we are using "APIv6" Apps, which run the graphics in a separate program instead of a thread. Just avoid the graphics program to be started, i.e. by choosing a different screen saver than "BOINC".

In the 6.10 Beta package you could remove the tags referring to the *_graphics_* files from the app_info.xml if you want to disable the graphics just for Einstein@home.

Thanks for the report. I'm investigating.
This looks like the checkpointing may not work on your machine, for some reason. You're probably ok as long as you don't need the checkpoints, i.e. the BOINC client isn't stopped and the application is kept in memory while suspended. Anyway I'll see if there is a serious bug in our code.

I couldn't find this problem in the results of the same applicacation version (301) on similar machines (Win XP), so I guess it;s not a problem in the code of the new App.

What installation are you running BOINC in (service, single user?). It coul dbe that there is something wrong with the slots directory on the machine. Could you run a filesystem check and check the permissions?
