You are doing nothing wrong.

You are doing nothing wrong. There seems to be a bug in the client triggered by the new app_info.xml file. We are currently looking into it.

Ok, we found it. Bruce should put a new 0.08 archive on the server soon.

OK, this is now fixed.

OK, this is now fixed. Apologies for the trouble! Please download and install the two files:
app_info.xml
einstein_0.08_powerpc-apple-darwin
again.

Be sure to stop BOINC before doing this, then restart when you are done.

Thanks for all your efforts to fix this pausing bug. I just installed .08 on my 1 GHz PowerBook, running 4.44 as CLI. It's resuming a SETI WU at the moment, but should transition to an Einstein WU shortly.

Note that the SETI app also has this bug (bug was in the BOINC application library) -- SETI will rebuild their app soon to fix this.

Bad news: 0.08 has a suspend problem, but now in a different way.

Using the same setup as I reported below (http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/forum_reply.php?thread=2352#15935) for 0.05, except now this machine only has a single WU, and only from E@H. Here's the new behavior:

- Upon using the BOINC menubar option "Suspend," the BOINC manager "Work" tab shows the WU as "Suspended", and the "CPU time" and "Progress" stats stop updating. This is all good.

- Activity Monitor shows the einstein_0.08_po thread taking 0.00% CPU (which is good, and a big improvement over einstein 0.05). It takes 2 threads.

- However, Activity Monitor now shows the process "boinc" as taking all available CPU% (about 75% on this machine), and 1 thread. In addition there is the usual process "BOINCManager" taking its usual ~8% CPU and 1 thread.

My cooling fan also reveals that the BOINC "Suspend" is not really suspending.

Then, when I use the BOINC menubar option to return to "Run based on preferences" the "Work" tab shows my sole WU as "Paused", stats there do not update, and Activity Monitor now says:
1) einstein_0.08_po thread taking 0.00% CPU and 2 threads.
2) boinc taking ~20% CPU and 1 thread
3) BOINCManager taking ~8% CPU and 1 thread

In effect, upon returning to "Run based on preferences," the WU now truly pauses.

Then, when I use the the BOINC menubar option to shift to "Run always" the "Work" tab still shows my sole WU as "Paused", stats still don't update, and Activity Monitor now says:
1) einstein_0.08_po thread taking 0.00% CPU and 2 threads.
2) boinc taking ~80% CPU and 1 thread
3) BOINCManager taking ~8% CPU and 1 thread

Thus by using "Run always" I can return it to the weird state it had when I first selected "Suspend."

Hope this is useful,

Alan, I have not been able to reproduce boinc taking 80% of CPU time. On my system when I do what you describe I see BOINCManager take 10% of CPU and boinc take 0.2%.

Could you confirm that you are using the "Recommended version (standard GUI) 4.43" from the BOINC download page ? What if you use the 4.72 development version from the BOINC dev download page ?

Alan, 1. I can't reproduce

Alan,

1. I can't reproduce your problem either. However I am currently running a development Client (4.71) which might behave a bit differently. Anybody else seen this?

2. In any case this seems to be not a problem of the App, but of the Client.

3. It may also indicate a software or hardware problem on your machine. Which OS version are you running?

RE: Here's my new problem.

Here's my new problem. I haven't received any new WUs since upgrading to Einstein .08. Is there something going on with the server. I have three project attached and I am almost out of WUs. Two projects are empty, Einstein and SZTAKI Desktop Grid. Seti@home seems to be the only one downloading any new work. Is anyone else having this problem?

I looked at your host, #358216, in the scheduler log. It's contacted the scheduler a couple of times in the past day, but not requested ANY work. This may be because of the new 'long term debt' policies in the BOINC client; on your machine Einstein@Home may have built up a long term debt compared with SETI@Home. I suggest you look in the 'Problems and Bug reports' forum to see discussion of this. I don't understand it well but know that the normal advice is 'just wait a few days and it will sort itself out'.

RE: Not sure what is

Quote:

Not sure what is happening on my computer (BOINC 4.44 MacNN, 10.3.9). Ever since I installed Einstein client 0.08 (which was yesterday night), things have gotten way too slow. In 19+ hours, the client claims it has completed only 2.3% of this WU . On average, Einstein has been using 92% of the CPU for the last 19 hours. The unoptimized client used to take 20 hours for a WU, while the beta versions (0.02 and 0.05) used to take slightly more than 10 hours/WU.

Has any body else noticed this with 0.08? If not, is someone willing to help me figure out the problem? Currently, the computer is not attached to any other project. Thanks.

Hmmm, weird. The 0.08 app has only a single tiny difference from 0.05, which should not have this effect. So I have no idea what's wrong. Could you start up the 'Activity Monitor' and look carefully at the process list to be sure that there is nothing else running on your system? Eg extra copies of BOINC or of the BOINC manager, for example?

RE: I've got a Dual 1.0 GHz

I've got a Dual 1.0 GHz G4, BOINC Advanced GUI 4.43, and the 0.08 app. Nothing seems to be wrong aside from the "running" WU and the WU showing a gain in CPU time not always matching. I've seen this without the beta app, so I assume this is BOINC-related because a restart of BOINC fixes this.

Could you please describe this problem in some more detail? I'm not aware of it. Also please describe in more detail how you fix it. How do you restart BOINC?

Alan, I was able to

Alan,

I was able to reproduce the problem. It seems to be bound to the latest system update to 10.4.2, it works correctly with 10.4.1 and before. I'll continue to investigate this.
